VHS tapes and their plastic cases can’t typically be recycled through standard household collections - but that doesn’t mean they should be treated as ordinary waste. There are safer, more responsible ways to dispose of them.


Donate Your VHS Collection

 

If your tapes are still in reasonable condition, donating them can be a far better alternative to disposal.

  • Home-recorded tapes cannot be accepted
  • Bootleg or unofficial copies cannot be accepted

Why VHS Disposal Matters

 

What many people don’t realise is that VHS tapes are not biodegradable. Like many mixed-material products, they don’t simply break down harmlessly in landfill.

 

Over time, they can degrade slowly, potentially leaching chemicals into the surrounding environment.

 

The magnetic tape inside a VHS is made from Mylar (a form of plastic polyethylene), often containing phthalates and chemical coatings. Combined with the hard plastic casing, this creates a product that is:

 

  • Non-recyclable through standard systems
  • Environmentally persistent
  • Potentially hazardous if disposed of incorrectly

 

Clamshell cases, while plastic, are also rarely accepted in household recycling due to their size and material type.

 

 

The Best Way to Dispose of VHS Tapes

 

Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs)
This is the most recommended option across the UK.

 

  • Most councils advise taking VHS tapes to a local HWRC
  • They are typically placed in general waste or energy-from-waste streams
  • While not recycled, they are handled in a more controlled and environmentally responsible way

 

Important:
Do not place VHS tapes or cases in your kerbside recycling bin.

 

 

If You Can’t Access a Recycling Centre

 

VHS tapes and cases can be placed in your general household waste bin.

 

While not ideal, this is accepted practice across many UK councils and ensures they are disposed of within regulated waste systems, far preferable to improper dumping.

 

 

Upcycling & Repurposing VHS Tapes

 

Before you throw anything away, VHS tapes and their cases offer surprising potential for reuse; especially if you’re creatively inclined.

 

Clamshell Cases

  • Ideal for storage (craft supplies, cables, photos, documents)
  • Can be repurposed into display cases for collectibles
  • Often used for custom artwork or retro-style packaging
  • Great for organising small items in workshops or studios

 

VHS Tapes Themselves

  • The reels and tape can be used in art projects or installations
  • Magnetic tape can be repurposed for textured décor or mixed-media work
  • Empty shells can be transformed into novelty items or retro display pieces

 

There's also a niche but growing market for custom VHS-style products, where original shells and cases are reused for new artwork, packaging, or collectibles.

 

 

Reuse, Donate, or Resell

 

If the tapes are still watchable, it's worth considering passing them on:

 

  • Resale: Rare, cult, or niche titles may still hold value
  • Collectors: Some enthusiasts actively seek original tapes and cases
  • Community use: Artists and creatives often look for bulk quantities

 

Many charity shops no longer accept VHS tapes, although this is changing, but you may still find interest through:

 

  • Facebook Marketplace and local community groups
  • Community peer-to-peer marketplace apps like Vinted, Gumtree, or Shpock
